Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I dined with the Kennedy's. Ok cooked from the cookbook. Did anyone watch The Kennedy's mini-series last night?
I bought the book below at the Border's big book sale for a whopping $20, reduced from $75! It is a cookbook called "In the Kennedy Kitchen" by Neil Connolly. What was most interesting about this book was that not only did the recipes look delicious and easy to make but also because Neil Connolly, who was Rose Kennedy's personal chef until her death in 1995, shares stories and offers a refreshing angle on one of the most famous family's in the world. Including a story about Maria and Arnie's Wedding Day!
Below is Rose Kennedy's house that her husband Joseph Kennedy bought in 1936 for $25000. Apparently that was a bargain for the house. He then had the extensions put on and the wraparound verandahs to accomodate his 9 children. He apparently had a home movie theatre put in at a cost of $15000. This house was the first of four house bought around it that became known as "The Compound".
There are so many delicious recipes in here that I really had to edit back on the photos.
These are all favourites of the Kennedy Family.
Neil was responsible for all the catering at all the weddings held at "The Compound" at Hyannis Port which was pretty much all the weddings in the Kennedy Family. The one below was of course Maria Shriver and Arnold Swarzanegger's wedding. They just pitched the tents and off they went.
In the wedding shot in the mug above is clam and corn chowder. Apparently this was the all time favourite of the Kennedy clan and was cooked at pretty much every event and was even packed in baskets and taken out sailing.
In it are roast chickens, lobster and crab salads, fritattas, breads, sweet loafs, clam and corn chowder, cole slaws and so much more.
And of course they never went out sailing without their favourite choc chip cookies. (will be making this very soon)
It was such a huge compound.
This house was the one John F Kennedy and wife Jackie bought in 1956. This is 300 feet from Rose's and became part of "The Compound".
Photos of Rose's husband Joseph and the sons she lost.
Needless to say it is an amazing cookbook with great recipes, photos and history. It is a fascinating and refreshing read.

And of course Irish Stew.
The side dishes look just as delicious.
I wasn't aware that the Kennedy's were huge sailors, to the point that before anyone could sail, they were thrown overboard as a right of passage but more so they could understand the power of the ocean.
This is Neil on the right carrying an esky full of food for the Kennedy's sailing adventures for the day.
