BE TRUE TO YOURSELF GIVEAWAY

Hope everyone had a lovely Easter and enjoyed the time off with family and friends.

Just prior to the Easter break I was sitting down having coffee with friends and the topic of style always pops up, whether it is fashion and/or home wares.  My friends and I all agree that people are just born with it and others pay people for it. It's what makes the world go round! These days we see so many trends so very quickly it makes our heads spin that we don't know where to look.  I say look within yourself. I don't believe there are any hard and fast rules, but one that I always stick by is "BE TRUE TO YOURSELF". If you do this then you will be comfortable and happy even when you are bucking the trend.

I believe even people born with style need guidance at times as much as those without it.  Believing I had loads of style as a quirky individual I thought I didn't need any guidance, until I happened upon this book several years ago. It is "The Little Black Book of Style" by Nina Garcia. To say I love this book is an understatement. It is a fabulous little book that guides you to finding your own individual style, loving it, owning it and being confident with it.

Not only do I love the illustrations in it by Ruben Toledo, but also the many enlightening one liner insights into how Nina thinks and how really we should too. She does not under any circumstance encourage us to splurge all our money on designer clothing but quite the opposite, instead we must simplify our wardrobes.

My favourite style tip which was the eye opener or me in the book is to "choose whether you want 20 ordinary tops or 5 fabulous ones" I know which I choose. When shopping I always think of this comment and apply it to all aspects of my wardrobe. (Remember the YSL Tribtoo 80 small leopard print Pumps - 1 fabulous pair of shoes as opposed to 5 ordinary pairs)

So my giveaway today is Nina Garcia's "The Little Black Book of Style". It is open to all registered followers of SoniaM. To enter, simply become a follower if your not already and leave a comment on your best style tip whether it is yours or advice given to you.

The winner will be announced on Monday May 9th and is open to international followers aswell.

Good Luck!

  1. Love the blog Sonia.

I couldn't agree more with your post. This article in the CM today made me laugh. I think some people are completely devoid of style.

I think one of the best pieces of advice given to me, though, is that it's now necessarily what you wear, but how you wear it.

In Ms G's case, it is not always (usually, but now always) what she is wearing but how she wears it that lets her down. She should take a few pointers from Gai.

  2. I agree girls. Some of the most memorable garments in the world have been simple, elegant pieces that still hold their own today. I was reading an article on Edith Head (famous costume designer). She was nominated for 35 Academy awards and won 8 - the most awarded woman in history. When you look at the women she dressed - Grace Kelly, Tippi Hedren, Liz, Audrey - those gals all had style!!!

  3. My best style tip was handed down to me from my mother! Stylish people know their own body and how to dress it. Know your body shape and dress to suit your personality...finally - always carry a fantastic handbag!

  4. hmmm my best style tip would be to either pair loose bottoms with fitted tops or vice versa...and never wear loose tops and bottoms together or tight tops and bottoms either.

  5. I'm a new follower via GFC :) On a similar note to the previous comment - either show off legs or chest, ie. wear a short skirt or dress, then make sure the top is modest, you don't want too much of a good thing! ;) I think the best advice though is to dress for your personal style and body shape, not what you think it trendy at the time. I see so many people trying desperately to wear every trend at once, regardless of whether any of it suits them.
