When I first started making jewellery with semi-precious stones I was frequently asked about what the different stones meant that I was using. I have to admit I was never really interested in their meanings, I just loved working with them because of their colours, the different shapes and facets they came in, the sizes and how beautiful mixed with other pieces they looked. I always thought that I would leave the so called "spiritual" side to the hippie's. I did always think though that we were attracted to certain stones but not because of anything other than that we liked the colour, shape or design of the piece.
Now having worked with the stones for a number of years I have seen how people and stones make a connection that we can't see nor understand. It is just a knowing like two magnets that can't help but join. Upon researching this I learnt that civilisations have been using stones for healings for thousands of years and this is well documented.
My first experience with the power of stones was when I was18 years old and I really wanted a ring. I searched everywhere and knew that when I saw the ring I would know it. I had no preconceived ideas about colour or design or what stone I wanted. In the end I chose a ring with an oval shaped carnelian stone in the centre. Carnelian is a blood stone from India. It was found in large quantities in Egyptian tombstones because of their belief in the stone's power in the afterlife. Carnelian is used for benefits to increase energy, dispel insecurities and increase inner strength, protects from evil and poverty, calms temper and helps give a sense of humour.
I truly believe that at that stage in my life I wasn't in need of this stone but it obviously resonated for me at that age.
